Cordyceps sinensis is a fungus from the clubmoss family, related to the well-known poisonous ergot or protected in Poland cordyceps militaris. Two species, Cordyceps militaris and Cordyceps sinensis, have attracted considerable attention in the medical community and have been widely studied for their significant health and wellness properties.
The Chinese cordyceps, like many of its relatives, attacks insects. It is a parasite of caterpillars and insect pupae – especially moths. The fungus hyphae kill the caterpillar and fill its body, after which a long, club-shaped structure, called a rootstock, grows upwards. In natural conditions, the fruiting bodies of the fungus are collected above 3000 m above sea level in Tibet and the mountains of Nepal.
